Airport fire delays flights

Around 4,000 travelers were left in the lurch yesterday morning when 25 flights were postponed after a store caught fire inside Baiyun Airport in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province.

An electronic display board short-circuited, causing the fire above a men’s clothing store near the departure hall at around 9:14am, airport workers said.

Four fire engines were mobilized to put out the fire, which took about 12 minutes. No one was injured, but the store was severely damaged, China News Service reported.

“I heard something was burning and found the nearby store was on fire. The fire spread to the whole store within five minutes and some of the salespeople were so frightened and cried,” a salesperson from a nearby store was quoted as saying.

Two people were working on the store’s rooftop when the fire started. They quickly climbed down from the scaffold, the report said. Salespeople were evacuated from all stores in the vicinity, the salesperson said.

Most airport workers and travelers were wearing masks as the departure hall was still filled with smoke at 11am.
