Actor Ko released after drug abuse detention with Jackie Chan's son

BEIJING police early this morning released Taiwan movie star Kai Ko from administrative detention after he tested positive for marijuana in mid-August, said police authorities.

Kai Ko, also known as Ko Chen-tung, said he deeply regrets taking drugs and will never use them again, according to sources with the Beijing police authorities.

On August 14, Beijing police detained multiple people for drug-related offences, including Ko and Jaycee Chan, son of Chinese Kungfu star Jackie Chan. The junior Chan also tested positive for marijuana. Both admitted to taking the drug.

Police seized more than 100 grams of marijuana from Chan's home. Jaycee is under criminal detention for allowing others to take drugs in his apartment,

A man surnamed Song was detained the following day for allegedly selling the drug to Chan.

Ko was named "best new actor" at the 48th Golden Horse Awards and the 12th Chinese Film Media Awards for his role in the movie "You Are the Apple of My Eye."

Beijing police have tightened their crackdown on drug deals this year. Since January, more than 1,800 drug crime cases have been investigated, up 53.2 percent from the same period last year. More than 8,400 suspects have been detained, a 78.7-percent year-on-year increase.

Beijing will continue its "zero tolerance" policy on drug-related crimes, said the city's police authorities.
