9 people killed in blaze at trade center
NINE people were killed and 10 others were injured yesterday when a fire engulfed a trade center in southwest China’s Yunnan Province, local officials said.
The blaze started in a two-story building at the Dongmeng Lianfeng Agricultural Trade Center in the provincial capital of Kunming, before spreading to two other buildings, said a spokesman for the provincial public security fire control department.
Police were alerted to the fire at 4:38am, the city’s information office said in a statement.
The blaze engulfed an area of more than 3,300 square meters and destroyed more than 50 stores, it said.
A total of 10 people were taken to hospital for treatment, though three have since been discharged, it said.
An initial police investigation showed the fire was caused by an accident that happened when a merchant was unloading goods.
The trade center, which spans 3 hectares, is home to more than 200 stores.
