50% of all computers infected, poll says

MORE than half of the computers in China are infected with viruses, and the problem is growing, a survey said.
The nation’s computer virus infection ratio rose by 9.8 percent last year after falling for the previous five years, the National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center said in a report released yesterday.
In a survey, 55 percent of the machines examined by the center had viruses.
People using online banking and payment services are the most likely to get a virus, as hackers seek to steal their money and personal information, the study said, adding that users of websites like Weibo are also vulnerable.
More than half of the government website portals investigated were susceptible to cyber attack, it said.
Of the 2,714 sites examined last year, 1,367 were found to have security loopholes, the report said.
Fake web pages, spam e-mails, and network theft were the biggest cyber threats last year, it said.
Chen Jianmin, executive deputy director of the center, said the security loopholes revealed a lack of website administration and net security technologies in several organizations.
“Some internal computers are totally unprotected from hackers,” he said.
More attention should be paid to the security of government websites, rather than just considering their service functions, he said.
