44 dead, 11 injured in Tibet bus crash

A TOUR bus plunged 10 meters from a highway in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region on Saturday after crashing into an SUV and a pickup.

Two Shanghai tourists, a man and his son, were among 44 people who were killed.

Their identities have not yet been released.

The Shanghai Tourism Administration said the pair had booked a trip to Tibet through the Shanghai Global Travel Agency in Xuhui District and joined a group run by the Feixiang Travel Agency in Tibet after they arrived in the region.

Four relatives were due to arrive in Lhasa, Tibet’s capital, last night.  Three representatives of the Shanghai travel agency are with them.

The accident happened on the No. 318 National Highway in Nyemo County, about 90 kilometers from Lhasa.

The conditions of four people in the SUV and the truck driver were not known last night.

Police have detained the managers of the Tibetan travel agency and the bus tour company, Xinhua news agency reported.

A man who answered the phone at the Lhasa-based Shengdi Vehicle Tour Co said as far as he knew there were no foreigners among the passengers, but refused to comment further.

The bus passengers were mostly tourists from Anhui, Shandong and Hebei provinces, Xinhua reported.

Eleven injured passengers are being treated in several hospitals in Lhasa but their injuries are not said to be life-threatening.

Photographs released by the news agency showed the vehicle lying upside down.

Tourism has been on the rise in the scenic Tibetan Plateau, where mountain roads are often treacherous and can be particularly dangerous in the summer rainy season.

The road where Saturday’s crash occurred had a massive landslide earlier in the week, covering a 280-meter stretch in debris, according to China’s weather services.
