3 dead in Xinjiang terrorist attack

THREE people were killed and 79 wounded in a terrorist attack at the south railway station in Urumqi, capital of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, last night.

Four of the injured are in a serious condition, police said.

There was an explosion at a station exit as a train from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, was arriving around 7:10pm. Terrorists attacked members of the public with knives and detonated explosive devices, Xinjiang police said. The injured have been taken to hospital for emergency treatment. The blast centered around luggage left on the ground between the station exit and a bus stop.

Police cordoned off all entrances to the station square after the blast and train services were suspended.

The station resumed normal operations around 9pm. The bus route to the railway station also resumed normal operations, said Yang Hongjun, general manager of Urumqi City High-Speed Public Traffic Company. The company has strengthened security checks at bus stops, Yang said.

The station is one of three railway stations in the city and the largest in Xinjiang.

Xinjiang intercity railway lines linking Urumqi with the cities of Kuytun, Shihezi, Karamay were due to start operations today.

The attack came on the last day of President Xi Jinping’s four-day visit during which he stressed the importance of stability in the region.
