3 children die in kindergarten collapse

THREE children died when the roof fell in on two classrooms at a kindergarten in north China’s Hebei Province on Saturday.

Villager Chen Min said he heard cries for help over Xujie Village’s loudspeaker and rushed to the scene, joining a dozen other villagers in rescue efforts.

He told Southern Metropolis Daily: “We tried to dig out the children with our hands. I saw four or five children found and taken to hospital. One boy was dying after he was dug out.”

Another villager described the boy as having blood coming out of his mouth.

“Villagers gave him artificial respiration and cardiac massage. But he was very pale. I guessed he had little chance of survival after I saw that.”

The villager said he saw kindergarten teachers checking name lists and finally confirming that the dead were two boys and a girl.

Police said the classrooms, in a row of houses, had been rented from the village committee and renovated to cope with a rising number of children.

No official approval for the work had been issued and an unspecified number of officials from the privately run Chunlei Kindergarten are being questioned.

Villagers described the classrooms as “dilapidated.”

It wasn’t known how many people were in the building at the time. The children had been waiting to be picked up at 4pm when the roof suddenly collapsed.

The kindergarten has nine teachers and 190 pupils.

The Yongqing County government said that in addtion to the children who died, one child suffered slight injuries while two were suffering from shock.
