2nd death from new strain of bird flu
Health authorities in east China’s Jiangxi Province have confirmed another human case of H10N8, a new strain of bird flu.
A 75-year-old man in Nanchang, the provincial capital, was admitted to hospital on February 4 but died on February 8, the provincial health and family planning department said yesterday.
Health experts urged the public to stay away from live poultry and to develop good hygiene habits.
On December 17, local health authorities in the province confirmed the first human infection of H10N8 after a 73-year-old woman died from the virus.
Health experts said then that H10N8 was known among birds, but a human infection had not been reported before.
Meanwhile, China reported four more human H7N9 virus infections yesterday.
On Wednesday, a 19-year-old man in central China’s Hunan Province was confirmed to have contracted the virus, bringing the total to nine in the province.
South China’s Guangdong Province also reported three more cases yesterday.
The patients were an 8-year-old boy, a 46-year-old man and a 65-year-old man.
So far China has reported more than 120 human H7N9 cases this year, including at least 31 deaths.
