20 stung by jellyfish at Jiangsu beach, 8 sent to hospital

NEARLY 20 people were stung by jellyfish yesterday at Lianyungang in Jiangsu Province — including seven who were treated and released by a hospital, and one who had extensive stings and was admitted for further treatment, Yangtze Evening News reported today.
“I felt something was attached on my leg and I felt pain,” said the woman from provincial capital of Nanjing who was stung the worst, with welts all over her body except for her face.
Her legs were covered with cobweb-like marks. Her condition improved with treatment.
The stings occurred as people were playing in the water near the shore in the afternoon.
“It felt like I got an electric shock, itchy and painful. I ran to the shore and found my right foot red and swallow,” one victim said.
Administrators of the beach promised to cover their medical bills.
A beach official said jellyfish appeared to have been dismembered for an unknown reason in the sea and tentacles washed up at the beach.
A sign warning visitors of jellyfish and telling them how to deal with stings has been placed on the beach.
The incidence of being stung by jellyfish is higher in the summer, said Yang Dongjiang, beach manager. “We send patrol boats and lifeguards to check and clean up jellyfish everyday.
