20 killed, 12 injured in separate bus accidents

Sixteen people, including 11 students, died in a road accident in southwest China’s Sichuan Province yesterday.

At around 2pm a passenger bus collided with a heavy-duty truck loaded with sand and cobblestones in Zhenwu Village in  Dazhou City, local authorities said. The bus plunged into a three-meter-deep riverbed, the Dazhou emergency response office said.

The bus and the 24 people  on board, including 12 students, was then buried by sand and cobblestones from the overturned truck.

Sixteen people were killed and four, including a student, were seriously injured, the office said. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

In a separate accident yesterday, four people were killed and another eight injured when a minibus plunged into a gorge in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The accident happened at around 1pm when the minibus, carrying 16 passengers, plunged into a 50-meter-deep valley in Yao Autonomous County of Du’an.

Two people died at the scene, and two of 10 others taken to hospital for treatment died later.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
