2 senior officials expelled on graft charges

A FORMER senior legislator has been expelled from the Communist Party of China on suspicion of corruption, the Party’s discipline watchdog said yesterday.

Jin Daoming, the erstwhile vice chairman of north China’s Shanxi Provincial People’s Congress Standing Committee, has also been removed from public office, said the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).

The official is alleged to have taken advantage of his position to seek profits for others, as well as asking for and accepting “a huge amount in bribes,” the watchdog said.

He received gifts and cash, and committed adultery, it said in a statement.

According to the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP), Jin has also been placed under “compulsory measures,” and is the subject of a criminal investigation.

Compulsory measures can include summons by force, bail, residential surveillance, detention or arrest, though the SPP did not elaborate.

The watchdog’s statement said Jin is suspected of breaking the law, adding that any proceeds he accumulated by breaching Party discipline will be confiscated.

A report in Caijing Magazine in September accused Jin of using his position to protect Bai Peizhong, the former chairman of the state-owned Shanxi Coking Coal Group, who was embroiled in a corruption scandal.

Also yesterday, the CCDI said a former Party secretary and executive vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology has been expelled from the Party and dismissed from public office following a graft investigation.

Shen Weichen is alleged to have taken advantage of his position to seek profits for others, commit adultery and, like Jin, accept “a huge amount in bribes.”

He seriously violated Party discipline and is suspected of breaking the law, the watchdog said in a statement.

Shen is also the subject of an investigation by the SPP.

According to its website, the China Association for Science and Technology is the country’s largest organization of its kind, with links to millions of scientists, engineers and others in the field.
