13 arrested in raid on LegCo building

THIRTEEN people have been arrested in Hong Kong for obstruction and assault while trying to enter the Legislative Council Building by force, local police said yesterday.

Protesters gathered at the city’s government headquarters on Friday to rally against plans for a new town development in the northeastern New Territories.

Local television footage showed some of them pushing over barricades and surging toward an entrance to the building. A glass door and a fire escape door were damaged in the altercation.

Several people attempted to enter the complex by force, endangering their own safety and the safety of other people, police said.

The protesters ignored appeals and warnings, caused injury to officers and security staff, and damaged the building, according to police.

“To control the situation, police used pepper spray against the protesters,” they said.

Twelve men and one woman, aged 19-39, were arrested for various offenses, including obstructing officials and assaulting police.

An unnamed government spokesman said yesterday that the violence was “totally unacceptable.”

“Hong Kong is a law-abiding society. We cannot tolerate any violence,” the person said.

“Police are conducting a full investigation into the incident and the persons involved will be held criminally responsible,” he said.

Jasper Tsang, president of the Legislative Council, also expressed condemnation.

“We feel very regretful that some people disrupted the committee meeting of the Legislative Council through such means,” he told reporters yesterday.
