12 killed as earthquake rocks Tibet

THE Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Commission for Disaster Reduction of China yesterday issued a Level IV emergency response to the magnitude-5.9 earthquake in Tibet.

The tremor hit Dingri County in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region at 5:17pm yesterday following a larger quake in Nepal, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

Twelve people have been confirmed dead, with “many more” injured, the ministry said, adding that houses, roads and telecommunication lines had been damaged by the quake, which also triggered several landslides.

A massive magnitude-8.1 earthquake struck Nepal at 2:11pm yesterday, followed by a second at 2:45pm that measured magnitude-7.0.

After the initial quake, smaller tremors were monitored in Tibet and southwest China’s Chongqing City, the CENC said.

The civil affairs ministry has dispatched a team to the Tibet quake zone to assist locals and assess the damage.

Relief teams, including hundreds of firefighters with life-detecting equipment, have also been dispatched to the three hardest-hit counties, Nyalam, Saga and Gyirong, the ministry said.

More than 3,200 firefighters and 87 sniffer dogs from Tibet and neighboring provinces have been put on standby.

The public security ministry said it has sent rescue and relief materials worth more than 2 million yuan (US$323,000) to the Tibet fire department.
