Shanxi pair jailed for accepting bribes

A Jiangsu provincial court yesterday sentenced two former senior officials from northern Shanxi province to lengthy jail terms and seized their assets after they admitted accepting bribes totalling about 63 million yuan (US$9 million).

Nie Chunyu, former secretary-general of the Communist Party’s Shanxi Provincial Committee, and Bai Yun, former member of the Standing Committee of the Party’s Shanxi Provincial Committee received lesser sentences because they pleaded guilty and voluntarily handed over their illicit gains, the Nantong City Intermediate People’s Court in the eastern coastal province of Jiangsu said in a statement.

Nie was jailed for 15 years for accepting bribes worth about 45 million yuan for using his position to seek profit for others in corporate development, promotion of officials and transfers between 2004 and 2013, the court statement said.

He voluntarily surrendered four million yuan in assets.

Nie was ousted from the CPC in February last year after an internal probe found that he had accepted bribes and committed to adultery.

Bai was jailed for 12 years and handed over 2 million yuan in assets after admitting taking 17.8 million yuan in bribes.

The court also found that Bai, also former head of the United Front Work Department of the provincial committee of the CPC, took advantage of her various positions to seek profits for others in corporate restructuring, contracting projects, and job promotions and transfers between 2004 and 2013.

Bai was also expelled from the CPC in February last year after an investigation found she had taken bribes.
