Xi urges restraint in call with Trump
PRESIDENT Xi Jinping yesterday called for all sides to exercise restraint in relation to North Korea during a telephone call with US President Donald Trump.
The call came as Japan conducted exercises with a US aircraft carrier strike group headed for Korean waters.
Xi told Trump that China resolutely opposed any actions that ran counter to UN Security Council resolutions, China’s foreign ministry said.
China “hopes that all relevant sides exercise restraint and avoid doing anything to worsen the tense situation,” Xi said.
Trump sent the carrier group to waters off the Korean Peninsula as a warning, amid growing fears North Korea could conduct another nuclear test in defiance of United Nations sanctions.
Angered by the approach of the USS Carl Vinson carrier group, North Korea said yesterday that the deployment was “an extremely dangerous act by those who plan a nuclear war to invade.”
In a commentary, Rodong Sinmun, official newspaper of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, said: “The United States should not run amok and should consider carefully any catastrophic consequence from its foolish military provocative act.”
It added: “What’s only laid for aggressors is dead bodies.”
Two Japanese destroyers joined the carrier group for exercises in the western Pacific yesterday, and South Korea said it was in talks about holding joint naval exercises.
Worry that North Korea could be preparing to conduct another nuclear test or launch more ballistic missiles has increased as the country prepares to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the foundation of its Korean People’s Army.
Trump has vowed to prevent North Korea from being able to hit the US with a nuclear missile and has said all options are on the table, including a military strike.
Xi told Trump China is willing to work with all parties concerned, including the US, to realize peace on the Korean Peninsula.
He recalled reaching an important consensus with Trump during their meeting in Florida earlier this month and that they had recently enjoyed good communications.
With rapid changes in the international situation, it is necessary for China and the US to maintain close contact and exchange views on important issues in a timely manner, Xi said. He said China and the US should implement the consensus reached between them and consolidate the steady development of bilateral relations.
Xi also urged teams on both sides preparing for Trump’s visit to China later this year to strengthen coordination and for the early opening of a four-pronged bilateral dialogue mechanism. The establishment of the mechanism, covering foreign affairs and security, economy, law enforcement and cyber security, and social and people-to-people exchanges, arose from Xi’s meeting with Trump in Florida.
Xi also urged both sides to promote economic and trade cooperation, expand exchanges in military, law enforcement, cyber and people-to-people areas, enhance communications on major global and regional issues and promote China-US relations toward continued achievement of new development.
During the phone call, Trump said he had a very good meeting with Xi in Florida and expressed satisfaction with the development of the two countries’ relations.
