A young woman was rescued with the help of passers-by and police in central China's Hunan Province after she was beaten up, raped and thrust into a travel suitcase by a man late Monday evening.

The woman, whom police did not identify, has received proper treatment and is in stable condition, said the Xiangtan City police in a statement.

The suspect, surnamed Pan and aged 23, allegedly threatened, beaten up the woman and raped her that evening. Police said he later put the victim, who was unconscious then, into the travel suitcase. He was intending to dump the suitcase when some passers-by noticed the woman's screaming from inside the suitcase and stopped him, police said. Police said they were alarmed at 9:31pm and arrived the scene near the Muyuhu Lake in minutes.

Witnesses said the victim was all naked when they opened the suitcase to free her. One of her rescuers pulled off his clothes to get the woman covered.

The suspect fled and dived into the lake to escape when others stopped him. Witnesses said he had swum and struggled in the waters for more than an hour before he was seized. Police said the man was caught from the lake at about 11:20pm.

The man is currently under medical treatment and the case is still under investigation, police said.
