Training program for genetic counselors
A TRAINING program for genetic counselors has been launched in Shanghai.
A million children are born with some congenital deformity in China every year, and genetic testing and consultation can be effective in reducing the numbers. Demand for such services further increased after the government allowed all couples to have a second child.
“Genetic counseling is so important, and there is no such major and recognized profession in China, which lags behind developed countries like the United States by over 50 years,” said He Lin, director of the Chinese Board of Genetic Counseling. The board was established in 2015 to boost genetic study and consultation and has offered primary training courses for around 2,500 genetic counselors.
Genetic counseling can provide information and support to families at risk of birth defects or genetic disorders to improve medical treatment and avoid babies being born with genetic diseases.
He said: “Genetic testing and consultation is important to identify and prevent diseases. We need at least 20,000 professionals in China.”
Shen Yiping, director of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center’s department of medical genetics, said: “Genetic technology is developing very quickly. China needs the technology and can also make a contribution to the world.”
