Survey highlights lack of sex education

AROUND 44 percent of Chinese university students have had no sex education, according to a survey published yesterday.

The findings were released to co-incide with World Contraception Day.

The survey, organized by the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the China Family Planning Association, covered over 130 universities, with 17,966 respondents.

Some 23.6 percent of respondents said there should be no sex before marriage under any circumstances, while 31.8 percent said that premarital sex was acceptable as long as the couple were planning to get married.

Yao Ying, vice president of the association, said 10.1 percent of the surveyed had experience of pregnancy and 3.2 percent experienced repeated pregnancies due to insufficient contraceptive methods.

Education authorities are being urged to provide students with more reproductive health materials and services.
