Robot cops on the Beijing highway beat
A HIGHWAY patrol robot being tested by Beijing traffic police is capable of handling traffic violations such as illegal parking or driving in the emergency lane, local authorities said.
The luggage-sized robot, weighing around 20 kilograms, operates on the highway barrier at a speed of 5 kilometers per hour. A fully charged battery can power the robot for between five and eight hours, said a police spokesman.
The robotic cop can capture images and videos of illegal parking and driving in the emergency lane, then send the evidence back to the police, he said.
In addition to handling highway traffic violations, the robot can assist traffic police with other routine work. Car accidents usually cause traffic congestion, but they can’t stop the robot from quickly arriving at the site and sending back pictures to help police handle the situation.
It can also send a voice alert to vehicles in the event of congestion, accidents, road maintenance and bad weather.
More such robots will be used on the city’s highways to strengthen crackdowns on traffic violations and ensure safety, the spokesman said.
