Officials declare ‘yellow alert’ for severe weather

CHINA’S national observatory yesterday issued a yellow alert for a cold front that is forecast to sweep central and eastern China.
From today until Thursday, temperatures in most of the central and eastern part of the country are expected to drop by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius, said the National Meteorological Center.
In some parts of Henan, Anhui, Hubei and Hunan provinces, the temperature will drop by up to 16 degrees, said the NMC.
Yellow is the second-most severe level on China’s four-level color weather alert scheme.
The cold front will be accompanied by gales, rain and snow.
Meanwhile, under the influence of a strong cold spell, parts of Beijing have been hit by snowfall since early yesterday.
Much of the capital city has been hit with snow after 8pm yesterday.
The snow is forecast to last more than 40 hours, with a blizzard possible for the western and northern areas of the city, as the country’s national observatory issued a blue alert yesterday for northern China.
Departments of transportation, environment, power and heat supplies in Beijing have initiated emergency plans to cope with the first snow.
A total of 84 snow sweepers, 162 snowmelt watercarts, 91 snow-melting agent spreaders and 96 sidewalk snow sweepers have been prepared for the upcoming snowfall.
More than 2,000 technicians, 180 emergency buses and 50 relief vehicles have been summoned to ensure a smooth commuting during Monday’s rush hours.
From Friday to Saturday, northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning went through a transition period of mixed precipitation before full-on snow, causing some highways to be closed.
