LegCo pair barge into chamber
HONG Kong’s legislature descended into chaos yesterday as two members-elect defied an order barring them from taking their oaths after being disqualified earlier for insulting China and barged into the chamber, forcing the session to be adjourned.
On Tuesday, the president of the city’s Legislative Council had delayed the swearing-in of Yau Wai-ching, 25, and Baggio Leung, 30, and temporarily banned them from attending meetings.
Council rules state members cannot attend meetings or vote before they take the oath.
After the pair entered the Legislative Council’s main chamber yesterday, they were ordered to leave, but they refused.
The session was adjourned until next week.
The pair had their swearing-in oaths invalidated after they used an insulting word for China at a swearing-in ceremony two weeks ago. Yau had also slipped in an expletive.
Last week’s session ended abruptly when dozens of lawmakers walked out of the chamber moments before Yau and Leung were set to retake their oaths, depriving the session of a quorum.
Thousands of protesters rallied outside the legislature to condemn the pair.
Waving Chinese flags and denouncing Yau and Leung as traitors, the protesters gave a thumbs-down sign as they shouted: “Against insulting China, against Hong Kong independence, protect national dignity.”
The two insisted they had the right to enter the chamber to retake their oath of office.
