Kindergarten chief suspended after formaldehyde suspected of sickening 100 kids

THE chief of a kindergarten in Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province, has been suspended after about 100 children suffered from coughing, nosebleeds and skin irritations, suspected to be caused by the school’s recent renovation work, people.com.cn reported.

The city’s education authorities said they would suspend operation of the kindergarten until it received final medical reports on the children as well as an analysis of the kindergarten’s air quality.

The children from Kid Castle Kindergarten in Hengmao International City in Nanchang suffered from formaldehyde poisoning, according to a post on Sina Weibo, China’s microblogging service. Two kids were diagnosed with septicemia and others suffered various symptoms including high fever, coughing, nosebleeds and body rashes, the post said.

The kindergarten reportedly was renovated during weekends from last December until the end of April, and parents were not informed. Some teachers suffered chest pains, the Weibo post said, citing one of the children’s parents.

Officials from the kindergarten admitted the symptoms had something to do with the renovation, said a CCTV news report. An official from the city’s education bureau surnamed Zhang said the kindergarten had changed the floors and doorframes damaged by termites.

The kindergarten organized blood, liver and kidney function tests for the children in the city’s hospitals today and shifted some of the kids to another kindergarten.
