Heavy fog strands 5,000 at Urumqi airport

MORE than 5,000 passengers are stranded at an airport in Urumqi Friday after heavy fog has caused flights to be delayed or canceled.

According to Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, as of 10 a.m., more than 40 flights had been delayed and 19 canceled, stranding over 5,000 passengers. Another seven arrival flights were forced to land at other airports.

Heavy fog was also reported in the eastern province of Jiangxi Friday, stranding over 1,500 passengers as 15 flights were delayed at Changbei airport in Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi. Several expressways were also closed due to limited visibility.
