Former Party chief admits taking bribes

CHEN Chuanping, the former Party chief of Taiyuan, capital of north China’s Shanxi Province, admitted taking bribes and abuse of power when he appeared at Xuzhou Intermediate People’s Court yesterday.

Chen was accused of taking advantage of his various official posts from 2008 to 2013 to seek benefits for four entities and individuals, including Taiyuan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd (TISCO), in production, operations and personnel promotion.

Chen accepted bribes worth over 910,000 yuan (US$136,472), either by himself or through his wife, according to the indictment from the People’s Procuratorate of Xuzhou in east China’s Jiangsu Province.

The court heard that when he served as TISCO’s chairman from May 2005 to November 2007, Chen abused his power to order a subsidiary company to engage in futures trading overseas, causing losses to state assets of more than 907 million yuan.

Chen, who was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Party’s Shanxi Provincial Committee, expressed remorse in court.

Its ruling will be announced at a later date.
