Deadline for 10-year US visa holders

CHINESE passport holders with 10-year US visas will have to update their information online every two years from November, US Customs and Border Protection said yesterday.

They must log on to www.cbp.gov/EVUS to register with the newly developed Electronic Visa Update System and provide their name, birth date, emergency contact, passport information, biographical and employment information and other details.

Registering costs US$8 and the system is expected to be operational by the middle of next month. From November 29, anyone who hasn’t registered their details will not be allowed to travel to the United States.

“EVUS is designed to enhance both national security and the longevity of the joint agreement with China to issue 10-year visas,” Gil Kerlikowske, the border agency’s commissioner, said.

China and the US entered into a reciprocal agreement to issue visitor and business travel visas valid for 10 years in November, 2014. The agreement recognized that travelers would be required to periodically complete an online form updating their information.

The agency recommends travelers enroll at least 72 hours before they are due to leave for the US.

The policy also covers 10-year visa holders seeking to enter the country by land.

Students holding an F visa or H work visa holders are not affected.

The US has issued over 3.9 million 10-year visas to Chinese passport holders.

The border agency said that the new requirement for China is similar to requirements that nationals from 38 other countries must follow before traveling to the US.
