College compensates family of sacked teacher who died of cancer
A college which had fired a teacher after she was diagnosed with cancer has been forced to apologize to the teacher's family a week after he death, according to China National Radio.
Liu Lingli died on August 14 at the age of 32. About two years ago, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and was fired from her job by the Lanzhou Jiaotong University’s Bowen College in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China’s Gansu Province.
Liu’s parents claim the decision was made by the college director Chen Ling, who stopped her pay and medical insurance despite their pleas.
“Don’t cry in front of me! I’ve seen lots of people like you,” Chen reportedly shot back.
A week after she passed away, Chen and several other college officials visited Liu’s parents at home. They apologized and agreed to pay a compensation of 500,000 yuan (US$75,137) including her unpaid salaries and medical expenses.
The college said it would pay the amount within two days.
