China’s Internet users praise good deeds

CHINA’S Internet users have selected 10 individuals as “Good Samaritans” for the second quarter of 2016.

The winners were announced following hundreds of thousands of votes cast since July 1, according to Xinhua news agency, which initiated and sponsors the quarterly event.

They include Zhang Junping, who has tirelessly promoted traditional Chinese culture among the young, especially those with behavioral or social problems. He offers students classes such as how to play the musical instrument guzheng, paper-cutting and calligraphy at an educational institute he established in the northern port city of Tianjin.

More than 20 of the students had behavioral problems or were autistic, but they acquired professional skills after attending the free courses at Zhang’s institution.

Another winner is firefighter Cai Wei from central China’s Hubei Province who risked his life many times to save others.

Wang Feng, from central China’s Henan Province, is listed for saving his neighbors from a fire at their home despite being severely burned.

Village doctor He Xinglong made it onto the list for clocking up more than 400,000 kilometers going door-to-door in the poor village in north China’s Shanxi Province where he has been based for the past 16 years. He is on his sixth motorbike because of the state of the roads.
