CHINA'S first home-developed narrow-body aircraft C919 today finished its maiden flight at Pudong International Airport, marking a milestone for the nation’s entry into the global aviation market as a strong competitor.

The first C919 single-aisle aircraft which rolled off the assembly line in Shanghai in November 2015 took off from the fourth runway of the Pudong airport at 2pm and landed at 3:19pm smoothly.

Five crew members including the captain, copilot, observer and two test flying engineers boarded the aircraft which ascended to up to 3 kilometers with a highest speed of 319 kilometers per hour. The landing gear remained dropped during the first time flying to ensure a successful landing.

The crew has carried out 15 tests including those on the air and ground communication system and imitated a go-around in the air during the test flying, according to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the developer of C919.

A business jet with China Eastern Airlines took off beforehand and flew with the C919 during the maiden flight with crew members monitoring the flying conditions and taking pictures and videos.

The State Council, China’s Cabinet, approved China’s long-distance commercial aircraft project in February 2007. The COMAC was established in Shanghai in March 2008 to take charge of the development of the C919 single-aisle passenger aircraft project.

China’s aircraft industry starts much earlier. In the 1970s, China embarked on its first attempt to develop its own commercial aircraft.

Designed in the 1970s, the Y10 was China’s first commercial jet, with 125 seats. It was flown for more than 170 hours in test flights between 1980 and 1984, but, in the end, the project was scrubbed because of economic and political factors.

The C919, which has 168 seats and a range of about 5,000 kilometers, will compete with the updated Airbus A320 and new generation of Boeing 737. The company has received 570 orders for the aircraft from 23 foreign and domestic customers.
