Boy’s dying wish to save mother fulfilled with kidney transplant

A 7-YEAR-OLD boy’s final wish to donate a kidney to his mother was carried out by doctors in Hubei Province yesterday after he died of brain cancer, cnhubei.com reported.

The kidney transplant was completed at Jingzhou City’s Tongji Hospital at 10am yesterday, less than six hours after Chen Xiaotian died. It was the province’s first case of organ donation between immediate family members, the report said.

Doctor Chen Gang said the operation was a success and the boy’s mother will likely make a full recovery from renal failure. Chen added the mother would be moved from intensive care to an ordinary ward within a week if things go smoothly.

Chen also donated his right kidney to a 21-year-old woman and his liver to a 27-year-old man. Both of those transplants were also completed yesterday, the report said.

Chen was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor when he was five-and-a-half years old. He lost vision in both eyes at the beginning of this year when the tumor pressed against his optic nerve. His mother had uremia, which can only be cured by a kidney transplant.

Chen’s grandmother was the first to propose a kidney transplant between mother and son. The boy’s mother strongly rejected the idea at first. However, Chen insisted on saving his mother’s life, according to the report.
