Beijing police officers charged over death of man in custody

TWO of five police officers under investigation over the death of a man in custody have been charged with dereliction of duty, Beijing prosecutors said yesterday.

An autopsy showed that Lei Yang, 29, died of asphyxia due to “inhalation of content from stomach into the respiratory system,” prosecutors said, meaning he had been suffocated by his vomit.

A deputy police chief surnamed Xing and a police assistant surnamed Zhou, of the Dongxiaokou station, acted improperly when detaining Lei, they said. The two are also suspected of obstructing a follow-up investigation.

Shortly after the incident, police said Lei, who was caught on May 7 during an anti-prostitution raid on a massage parlor in the capital’s Changping District, had violently resisted officers, at which point he felt sick. He died despite emergency treatment in hospital, police said.

On May 17, Lei’s wife demanded prosecutors investigate the officers who had taken part in the raid.

She accused them of abusing their power, faking evidence and causing intentional injury.

According to the Jiemian news website, she saw that Lei’s body and face were covered in bruises and scars, and he had a swollen testicle, when she went to the hospital where he had been taken.

On June 1, prosecutors launched a probe into police officers involved in the raid.
