Baby severely burned after mom put hair dryer next to him to soothe him with running noise
A six-month old baby boy was left with severe burns to 50% of his body in a home fire on Sundy in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, and the cause was believed to be a working hair dryer his mother had put next to him to cheer him up, reported Jiangsu-based Modern Express.
The boy's mother reportedly alleged she found her son loved hearing the sound of a running hair dryer and so she turned on the hair dryer and put it about 20 to 30 centimeters away from him on the bed to soothe the baby while she left the room to focus on housework. She said she had put the hair dryer on cold air setting.
But 10 minutes later when she returned, she said she found a fire had started from the hair dryer, which seemed to be caused by short circuit of the device. The summer mat was nearly burned off, she said.
Doctors said the baby ws in shock when rushed to the hospital. He had 50 percent of his body burned and his right lower leg was "nearly scorched", said the doctors.
Doctors have completed the first surgery on the baby and he's still in critical condition, the report said.
