Anger at flight delay ends in detention

POLICE have detained three airline passengers caught on video slapping, verbally abusing and throwing food at ground staff in anger over a delayed flight.

Video of Monday’s incident at the airport in Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan Province, circulated widely online.

The three are thought to have become upset after their flight to the southern resort city of Sanya was delayed.

As staff tried to place angry passengers, two men and a woman began to shout, flung the contents of a lunch box at them and finally slapped one female staff member on the face.

Concerned over the rising number of such incidents on the ground and in the air, the central government has created a blacklist for airline passengers found to be acting disruptively or dangerously.

The blacklist is made public, and airlines, hotels and other travel professionals can use such a designation as grounds for refusing service to passengers who have misbehaved.

In February, China’s leading airlines got together to say that they would share the names of passengers whose names end up on the blacklist and ban them from their flights.
