AI to be applied to future wide-body aircraft

THE avionics system with artificial intelligence (AI) will be applied to future wide-body aircraft to realize unmanned flying, maintenance and air traffic management, an official with Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) said.

The artificial intelligence system that makes decisions for pilots will become a trend for future avionic systems, said Yan Linfang, director with the comprehensive avionic system design and research department of the COMAC Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute. She leads the development of the avionic system for the China-Russia wide body commercial aircraft project.

Currently, jetliners can already take off, cruise and land automatically using their onboard flight computers, but pilots operate manually for takeoff and landing to ensure the safety.

"In future, the pilot will only need to monitor the operation of the AI system," Yan told the Civil Avionics International Forum 2017. Hundreds of officials with aircraft manufacturers, airlines and avionic system suppliers took part in the forum to discuss the avionics trends, airworthiness certification and flight reliability.
