The town, built in Northern Song Dynasty and grew into a prosperous business center during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, boasts a history of more than one thousand years. Thus allowing for the growth of business and culture of the previously unknown town, enables the town as an originator of Shanghai’s local culture.
Through the lanes from Northern Song, the buildings of Ming and Qing, the bridges and bourroughs full of local characteristics, you can feel the traditional culture as well as modern life.
The tale of 'seven treasures' bears the hope of the folk in this ancient town. The old customs are recalled in the museum of crickets. The Old Restaurant, Tianxianglou provides the unique atmosphere of Qibao.
Local operas of Shanghai are played in the theaters. In the museum of miniature engraving, there is harmonious combination of Chinese folk art and classical culture. The western sculptures in Zhang Chongren Memorial Hall represent the tolerance and understanding of Chinese people toward foreign culture.
Memorial Hall of Zhang Chongren
Located in Qibao Town, Minhang District, the memorial hall covers an area of 600 square meters. With an architectural style adapted from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the decoration in the hall is novel but classic.
The items on display are precious and can be admired by both refined and popular tastes. The foreword in the preface hall, written by Wang Liping, the director of CPPCC in Shanghai, has appreciated Mr. Zhang Chongren’s patriotism and his pursuit of art.
There is also a bronze statue of Zhang Chongren created by one of his students, Mr. Yan Youren. The display room has been divided into six parts in biographical order.
The full and accurate texts, photos and paintings together with the sculpture masterpieces display the life and achievements of Mr. Zhang Chongren.
There are also numerous paintings and sculptures from students, who would like to express their respect for the master, have also made contributions to the glory of the memorial hall.
Maqiao Ancient Cultural Ruin
Located in Dongyutang Village, Maqiao Town, Minhang District, the ruin was discovered in 1959 and covers an area of more than 10 thousand square meters.
A lot of ancient stoneware, pottery, and antlers were discovered at this site. After the excavation in 1960 and 1966, the ruin has been intensively inspected. Maqiao Ancient Culture consists of three layers from different periods.
The upper layer is a ruin of the culture from the Spring, Autumn, and Warring State Periods.
The middle layer includes a numerous amount of stoneware, bones, and pottery from the early culure of the area near Taihu Lake, thus awarding the name Maoqiao Culture.
The lower layer is a marvel of it own, architectural ruins and tombs from the New Stone Age were discovered here.
Under the cultural ruins there is a shell sand zone, which indicates that the ruin was an ancient bank. The discovery of this ruin has great meaning for the geographical study of Shanghai.
Huangpu River Museum of Water Culture
Located at Xiejing Gulf, Maqiao Town, in the upper region of the Huangpu River, where tap water comes from, the museum covers an area of 198 acres.
The first phase of the construction is already complete. More than 3,000 trees have been transplanted here, of them 600 are over 100 years old.
The second phase of construction would include a Water Culture Square, a stone forest, an exhibition hall for history and culture of the Huangpu River, a hall of aquatic animals from the Huangpu River, a hall that includes information about the surrounding villages on the riverside, and a Volunteers’ Wall for the protection of the river.
