Culture and Art
In 2007, the district standardized the cultural centers for 357 villagers and residents committees and turned them into public cultural service centers. It organized nearly 30,000 cultural activities, involving nearly 1.8 million people. Specifically, the district held 239 major cultural activities, attracting over 220,000 participants, 4,271 cultural performances, attracting over 850,000 participants, 1,277 reading activities, attracting over 60,000 participants, and over 20,000 spare-time cultural team activities, attracting over 650,000 participants.
In the year, the district successfully held the opening ceremony of the mass cultural activities of the ninth Shanghai International Art Festival, the first Shanghai Chorus Festival of the SVA Sony Minhang in Golden Autumn, the activity commemorating the 100th birthday of Zhang Chongren, the fourth tap dance contest and a host of other cultural activities. In addition, the district also held major exhibitions, including the exhibition on eternal aerospace spirit and the exhibition on dignified elegance.
The district published the districts first list of intangible cultural heritages. In particular, four items were officially included into the Shanghais First List of Intangible Cultural Heritages. They were the ballads and proverbs in Chenhang, the hand lion dance in Maqiao, the knitting technique in Xinzhuang, and the shadow play in Qibao. Zhuanqiao Town and the ancient town of Qibao were respectively named as Shanghais special zones for popular cultural activities and for folk cultural activities.
Sports and Leisure
In 2007, the district successfully hosted the tennis and table tennis events of the 2007 World Summer Special Olympics, during which it received 715 athletes and coaches from 72 countries and regions. Event organization was a complete success.
In addition, the district also hosted the many major international and domestic sports events, including the 2007 ATP Master Series, the NBA China Tournament, the Dongli Cup International Marathon, the China-Japan-Korea Womens Hockey Friendship Tournament, and the National Badminton Championships. These events attracted over 150,000 spectators.
Also in the year, the Minhang Womens Hockey Team won the first ever national champion for Shanghai. Representing Shanghai at the National City Sports Meet, the athletes from Minhang won two gold, seven silver and two bronze medals, and also the award for sportsmanship. Throughout the district, a total of 162 sports grounds of 53 units are open to the public free of charge, benefiting over 800,000 people.
Spiritual Civilization
In 2007, the district made steady progress in developing spiritual civilization and social undertakings, by carrying out programs such as the plan of action for improving peoples scientific qualification and the sports for all program.
The districts score was 90.3 percent in meeting the 110 indicators of the national evaluation system for civilized urban districts, and was 85 percent in meeting the municipal and district indicators of civilization creation. It established 219 municipal civilized housing estates and 54 municipal civilized villages, both being the highest among Shanghais districts and counties. In addition, the district also successfully held the third Minhang Learning Festival.
