Green Environment

With blue skys, green grass, clean rivers, and thick forests Minhang is an enviormentalists safe-haven.

Not only does Minhang District have a forest coverage of nearly 40% it also has a per capita public green area that reaches 15.4 square meters, which is 4 square meters more than the downtown of the city. Thus making Minhang District the "lung of Shanghai."

The air quality in Minhang is superb. There are more than 2,400 rivers in the district and water covers 9% of the area.

This district is the only district in Shanghai which has been awarded for excellence in National Ecological District, National Model City of Environmental Protection and National Garden City as well as China Model of Ideal Living Environment.

Environmental Protection

The water quality of all rivers in the district continued to improve. A total of 229.5 kilometers of village rivers were cleaned up, with the main ones no longer looking black and smelling offensive. Air quality was 89 percent good. All streets and towns were placed under smog control. The district built 307 green housing estates and environmentally beautiful villages. In particular, the district has one national green housing estate and three municipal green housing estates. It also had 45 green schools, including two national ones and six municipal ones.

The district vigorously advocates recycle economy and clean production so as to reduce pollution and emission. In 2007, sulfur dioxide was cut by 350 tons, industrial COD was reduced by 106 tons, sewer piping rate rose to 78 percent from 73.6 percent in 2006, and the main pollutants were cut by 2.2 percent.

A total of 19 enterprises in the district were rated as green enterprises by the national environmental behavior rating system. Three units, namely the Xinzhuang Industrial Zone, the Wanke Langrun Garden and the Shanghai Fuji Xerox, were designated as the pilot enterprises for Shanghais recycle economy.

Urban Landscaping

In 2007, the district landscaped 67.95 hectare of land, bringing the landscaping ratio to 39.2 percent. The per capita public green land to 15.8 square meters. A total of 20 old residential areas were landscaped, involving 257,500 square meters. Three old parks were transformed.
