Geographic Location

Minhang District, shaped like a key, lies in the heart of Shanghai area, at 31.05° N and 121.25° E. It adjoins Xuhui District and Pudong New Area in the east, leans on Huangpu River in the south with Fengxian District on the opposite, borders Songjiang District and Qingpu District in the west, and neighbors Changning District and Jiading District in the north, with Hongqiao International Airport on its boundary.

Wusong River runs through its northern part, and Huangpu River traverses it from south to north, dividing it into two parts: Pudong and Puxi.

Minhang is a transportation hub linking Shanghai with the outer world. It is an important industrial base, a science and technology center, and a space center of the southwest Shanghai.

Climate

Minhang District has a typical north subtropical monsoon climate, with distinctive four seasons, abundant sunshine, moderate precipitation, and long frost-free period. The climate in Minhang District is characterized by warm spring, hot summer, cool autumn, and cold winter. The precipitation is moderate during the year and is evenly distributed during the four seasons.

In winter, influenced by the cold Siberian high, northwester prevails, and it is cold and dry. In summer, influenced by west pacific subtropical high, southeaster prevails, and it is hot and humid. Spring and autumn are the transitive periods of monsoon. The temperature is low and it often rains.

Administrative Division

Currently, Minhang District controls nine towns, three sub-districts, and one municipal industrial zone. In total, it has 156 villagers committees and 361 residents committees. The district government is located at Xinzhuang Town, the terminal station of Shanghai Metro Line 1 and Line 5.

Population Conditions

By the end of 2010, the district had 2,429,000 permanent residents, 1,204,000 of whom were non-native.

Life Expectancy

In 2010, the average life expectancy of the residents was 82.3 years (84.6 for the female), which has reached the middle level of developed countries.
