Geographic Location

Minhang District, shaped like a key, lies in the heart of the Greater Shanghai area, at 31.05 N and 121.25 E. It has Xuhui District, Pudong New Area and Nanhui District in the east, the Huangpu River and Fengxian District in the south, Songjiang District and Qingpu District in the west, and Changning District and Jiading District in the north.

The Hongqiao International Airport is on its boundary, the Wusong River runs through its northern part, the Huangpu River goes through the district from south to north, and the boundary is divided into two parts: Puding and Puxi.

Minhang is a transportation hub linking Shanghai with the rest of the country. It is an important industrial base and also a science and space center in the southwest part of Greater Shanghai.

Climate

Minhang District has a typical north subtropical monsoon climate. With four distinctive seasons, it has long winter and summer and short spring and autumn. Sunshine and rainfall are both plenty.

Administrative Division

Minhang District has nine towns, three sub-districts and one municipal industrial zone. In all, it has 161 villagers committees and 331 residents committees. The district government is in Xinzhuang Town, the terminal of Shanghais No. 1 and 5 subways.

Population Conditions

At the end of 2007, the district had 1.8457 million million permanent residents, 885.8 thousand had permanent household register, of whom its nonagricultural population totaled 778 thousand.

Life Expectancy

In 2007, the average life expectancy of the residents was 81.76 years. The life expectancy has reached the middle level of the developed countries in the world.
