Ying Yong meets guests from Montreal, Quebec
借直航契机促进友好交往 应勇会见蒙特利尔市长科德尔一行

SHANGHAI Mayor Ying Yong met his Montreal counterpart Denis Coderre and Quebec Minister of Tourism Julie Boulet from Canada on Sunday. They oversaw the signing of Shanghai-Montreal and Shanghai-Quebec agreements for tourism cooperation.

Montreal is the largest city of the French-speaking Quebec Province.

Ying expressed congratulations on the opening of direct flights between Shanghai and Montreal, sister cities since 1985. He said Shanghai doubled its ties by establishing sisterly relationship with Quebec Province in 2011.

The mayor said Shanghai and Montreal have cooperated for more than 30 years in economy, trade, science and technology, urban planning, culture, and environmental protection. Montreal is the economic center in Canada with advantages similar to that of Shanghai.

Ying said Shanghai is working hard to become an international center of economy, finance, trade and shipping as well as a global innovation center. The city aims to become a world-class metropolis in 2040. Shanghai and Montreal have enormous potentials for cooperation.

Ying said the two cities can leverage their advantages in cooperation. The opening of direct flights is good for tourism development and the exchanges between the governments and the people of the two cities.

Coderre and Boulet said Montreal and Quebec value highly their relationship with Shanghai. They are glad that the direct flight has turned the blueprint into reality.

They pledged to strengthen cooperation with Shanghai in fields of tourism and environmental protection and bring the cooperation to a higher level.

Canadian Consul General in Shanghai Weldon Epp joined the meeting.
