Yang Xiong meets French minister, Rhône-Alpes president

Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong met French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and Rhône-Alpes Regional Council President Jean-Jack Queyranne on Saturday. He said Shanghai has close economic, trade and cultural ties with France.
“This year is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between China and France. Shanghai is keen to broaden cooperation with France in areas of culture, education, health care and tourism,” the mayor said.
He briefed the guests on the construction of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and the city’s efforts in administrative reforms to facilitate investment and trade. He also welcomed French companies to participate in the development of the free trade zone.
Yang said Shanghai and Rhône-Alpes Region began exchanges as early as 1986 and upgraded their relationship in 2008 to that of sister cities. Shanghai wants to work with Rhône-Alpes Region to transform its Expo 2010 pavilion in Shanghai into a showcase of economic and culture exchanges between the two sides.
Fabius said France pays much attention to the free trade zone and wants to contribute to its development. His government also welcomes companies in Shanghai and other parts of China to invest in France.
He added that France hopes to expand cooperation with Shanghai in fields of tourism, culture and environmental protection.
Queyranne said Rhône-Alpes Region and Shanghai made impressive progress in cooperation and his region will sign a new memorandum of understanding for cooperation with Shanghai and use the Rhône-Alpes Pavilion as a platform to promote bilateral trade and cooperation in science, technology and culture.
French Ambassador to China Maurice Gourdault-Montagne and French Consul General in Shanghai M. Emmanuel Lenain joined the meeting.
