Shanghai mayor meets his counterpart from Haifa, Israel
上海市市长杨雄会见以色列海法市市长一行

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Yona Yahav, mayor of Haifa, Israel and his delegation on September 20 and said Shanghai has strong ties with Israel. Their country’s participation in World Expo 2010 Shanghai further strengthened the bilateral relationship.

He said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Shanghai last year promoted the exchange and cooperation between Shanghai and Israel.

Haifa and Shanghai became sister cities in 1993. They have cooperated extensively in economy, trade, science and technology, culture, education and tourism, Yang said, adding that Yona Yahav’s visit will expand the cooperation into healthcare, urban construction and urban management.

Yahav said he led a delegation to Expo 2010 Shanghai four years ago and the experience was unforgettable. Shanghai’s achievements in economic and social development are impressive.

He said the Israeli people remember Shanghai’s efforts to save Jewish refugees from the Holocaust in Europe and view Shanghai as the most important partner. He said the city of Haifa will cooperate more with Shanghai.

Arnon Perlman, the Israeli consul-general in Shanghai, attended the meeting.
