SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met his Los Angeles counterpart, Eric Garcetti, and his delegation yesterday.

Yang said China and the United States are trying to build a new type of relationships and the two presidents made substantial agreements at the newly-concluded APEC Summit in Beijing, which will benefit the people of two nations.

He said Shanghai wants to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Los Angeles. The two cities have many similarities and extensive opportunities for cooperation. Los Angeles has Hollywood while Shanghai is the birthplace of China’s film industry. The two sides can cooperate in film and cultural industries.

Shanghai is striving to become an international center of economy, trade, finance, shipping and innovation, the mayor said. Shanghai wants to cooperate with Los Angeles in education, science and technology, environmental protection and shipping.

Garcetti said he was impressed by Shanghai’s development in the past 30 years. Both LA and Shanghai are open ports with a sisterly relationship. They have cooperated in education, filmmaking, architecture, design, science and technology.

He said he will do more to let American people understand China and make contributions to the US-China friendship.
