Mayor tells ITU chief about 5G network research in Shanghai
上海力争5G商用首批城市 杨雄会见国际电信联盟秘书长赵厚麟

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong yesterday met with ITU Secretary-General Zhao Houlin, who was in town for the Global Conference for Health Promotion.

ITU (International Telegraph Union) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for issues that concern information and communication technologies.

Yang said digitalization plays a fundamental role in urban development. The Shanghai government has formulated a “smart city” five-year action plan and will promote Internet Plus in economic and social development.

The mayor said digitalization is important for industrial restructuring and upgrade. The 5G technology is the latest trend in Internet development. Shanghai is working with Huawei, ZTE and other Chinese companies and research institutes to develop and test 5G mobile networks. Shanghai hopes to be among the first few cities to run 5G networks with the approval of national authorities.

Yang said Shanghai is also trying to develop into a global innovation center and the city wants to cooperate with ITU in this endeavor.

Zhao said China’s IT industry has developed fast in recent years with a noticeable growth in R&D capabilities. The country is already a frontrunner in some technology areas.

He said ITU is keen to cooperate closely with Shanghai, promising that ITU will build a platform for companies to explore international markets.
