Mayor talks with EU ambassador to China
深化上海欧盟合作交流 杨雄会见欧盟驻华大使史伟

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong met Hans-Dietmar Schweisgut, EU ambassador to China, last Thursday. He said Shanghai and the European Union enjoy long-term friendship and strong economic ties. Twenty-four EU countries have consulates in Shanghai while Shanghai has 18 sister cities in the EU.

Yang told the guest that the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone has operated for more than a year and has achieved positive results. The zone will be expanded this year according to the plan of the central government and it will adopt a new negative list for foreign investment.

The mayor said he will listen to suggestions by European businesses and companies from around the world to create a business environment that complies with international rules and market practices.

He reaffirmed Shanghai’s effort to develop into an international economic, financial, trade and shipping center as well as a global innovation center. The city’s development will bring more opportunities for broad cooperation between Shanghai and EU countries.

Schweisgut spoke highly of Shanghai’s development strategies and targets and said the EU and Shanghai have cooperated closely in many areas. Many EU companies have invested in Shanghai to take advantage of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone and participate in the city’s development.

Schweisgut said the European Union is keen to widen cooperation with Shanghai for mutual economic growth.

Stefano Beltrame, the Italian consul general in Shanghai, joined the meeting.
