Mayor meets corporate leaders from Japan, Thailand
为新兴业态发展提供支撑 杨雄会见日本乐天集团董事长

SHANGHAI Mayor Yang Xiong talked with Hiroshi Mikitani, chairman and CEO of Rakuten Inc, Japan's biggest online retailer, and Soopakij Chearavanont, vice chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group from Thailand in separate meetings yesterday.

Yang said that new business models flourished rapidly in recent years, such as cross-border e-commerce and Internet finance. Shanghai is pushing for institutional reform and financial innovation with bold measures taken in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone to facilitate trade and investment.

He said the Shanghai government supports the development of emerging industries such as Internet finance industry and will improve their business environment by adopting international standards and practices.

The mayor said Shanghai is one of China’s logistic centers and is working hard to build an e-port system in the Asia-Pacific region to support new businesses, such as cross-border e-commerce. He encouraged Rakuten to expand business in Shanghai and cash in on the China market.

Mikitani briefed Yang on Rakuten’s business development and said Rakuten is an Internet company with a focus on online retail business. He said China has huge potentials for cross-border e-commerce and Rakuten will cooperate with Chinese partners in this new business.

Rakuten Inc now operates in 28 countries and regions.
