Mayor meets business leaders before advisory council meeting

MAYOR Yang Xiong met bosses of foreign multinationals who came to Shanghai last week for the annual meeting of the International Business Leaders Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai.

They were Heinrich Hiesinger, chairman and CEO of Thyssenkrupp; Ulrich Spiesshofer, president and CEO of ABB; Soopakij Chearavanont, executive vice chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group; Severin Schwan, CEO of Roche; Andrónico Luksic, president of Luksic Group; Martin Sorrell, the current chairman of the advisory council and CEO of WPP; Koji Nagai, CEO of Nomura Holdings; and Yorihiko Kojima, senior advisor for Mitsubishi Corporation.

Yang said the council meeting is an important platform for Shanghai to learn from international experiences and broaden exchanges with other places in the world. He is looking forward to discussing Shanghai’s development problems with them and hearing their advices.

The mayor said Shanghai is continuing reforms in its free trade zone and speeding up its transformation into a global financial center and innovation center. It hopes to become one of the most advanced cities in the world in 2040.

This year’s council meeting will focus on the theme of “Shanghai’s sustainable development in Internet age.”  Yang said the Internet not only brought changes and challenges but also opportunities. Shanghai will seize the opportunities and stay competitive through economic transformation.

He promised continued efforts in reform and opening and to change the role of the government, and create a good business environment in line with international laws and practices.

The foreign business leaders spoke highly of Shanghai’s achievement in economic development and made suggestions with regard to their own industries. They said the impact of the Internet is felt in every aspect of human society.  Companies have to adapt to the Internet age and seek business growth through innovation.

They expressed a willingness to incorporate their corporate goals into Shanghai’s development plan and make more contributions to the city.
