Xujiahui sports park to open 24/7

SHANGHAI’S largest public sports venue is to be built in Xujiahui, according to the city’s top planning body.
Xujiahui Sports Park, covering 406,000 square meters by Caoxi Road N., Lingling Road, Tianyaoqiao Road and Zhongshan No.2 Road S., will have venues, running tracks and spacious green areas.
The park will stay open round the clock and will incorporate the existing stadium, gymnasium and swimming pool, along with the high-rise office building Dongya Mansion — all four structures are to undergo major renovation.
Some existing structures within the designated park area will be replaced by trees and jogging lanes, Shanghai Planning, Land and Resources Administration said.
Shanghai Olympic Club hotel, which was opened in 1988 and once served foreign journalists for the Special Olympics in 2007, will be demolished.
The planning body is soliciting public responses by the end of this month. Suggestions should be sent to gtjgg@xh.sh.cn.
“The sports park will host top sports events, meet the rising demands of local residents on sports and recreation, carry out training for amateur teenage athletes as well as guide the development of sports industries,” an official with the administration said.
Shanghai Stadium will be renovated to be able to host major sports events, such as football, rugby, baseball, rock climbing and squash.
It will remain the home pitch for the local soccer team Shanghai SIPG Football Club and host the IAAF Diamond League Shanghai. The city’s largest stadium was built in 1997 for the 8th National Games with 56,000 seats.
The neighboring Shanghai Gymnasium, built in 1975, will be expanded to be able to host table tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball and snooker events. It will also host boxing, kick-boxing and cyber games.
The swimming pool will serve as a training base for swimming and diving for teenagers. It will also open to the public.
The management and operation center of the future park will be headquartered in Dongya Sports Mansion.
The building will be renovated to synchronize its appearance with other park structures, as well as to make it more energy efficient.
The park will also have hills, ponds, grasslands and public plazas to attract citizens, according to the administration. Trees will be planted, especially along Zhongshan No.2 Road S., to block the noise and vehicle emissions from a nearby elevated highway.
Shrubs will also be planted to separate various smaller outdoor sports venues within the park including football pitches and basketball courts to open to the public.
Two ring-shaped running tracks will connect the four major venues and go across the park. The tracks will also be linked to other pedestrian paths in Xuhui District.
A 60,000 square meter underground venue will be built at the south of the gymnasium for the public to take part in sports events like table tennis, badminton, tennis, fencing, boxing, yoga and dancing.
An underground tunnel will connect Metro lines 1 and 11 stations with the sports venues. Athletes will also be able to reach the venues from warm-up sites through the tunnels.
More than 1,000 underground parking lots will be built beneath the park.
