World Cup gambler’s kidnap scam to get parents’ cash

A STUDENT who ran up gambling debts betting on World Cup matches pretended that she’d been kidnapped to get her parents to pay a ransom, city police said yesterday. The college student from Wuxi in neighboring Jiangsu Province sent her family texts from Shanghai, claiming to be a kidnapper, said police. Unless 20,000 yuan (US$3,220) was paid, the 21-year-old, known as Xiao Cai, would be put to work as a prostitute, the “kidnapper” threatened.

When Shanghai police tracked her down, she was found watching a match from the tournament in Brazil. Xiao Cai admitted losing 1000 yuan betting on World Cup games online, and when her parents refused to give her the money, she left for Shanghai and came up with her kidnap plan.
