Work starts on 2-deck bridge over Huangpu

CONSTRUCTION started yesterday on the main structure of a new bridge across the Huangpu River between Minhang and Fengxian districts, which is due to open in 2020.

Several 70-meter-long steel piles were hammered into the riverbed to mark the beginning of the project on the Kunyang Road Cross-River Bridge.

The 1.94 kilometer bridge will connect Kunyang Road in Minhang and the Puwei Highway in Fengxian.

When it opens in 2020, residents will be able to reach Hongqiao and Pudong airports directly, said the group which is the city’s major bridge construction company.

It will become the first double-layer bridge — the upper level for vehicles and the lower level for pedestrians and cyclists — across the river, said project manager Wu Jun.

The single-tower cable-stay bridge will be served by eight elevators on both sides of the river with a capacity of 5 tons each for pedestrians and bikes, Wu said.

The bridge will be 136 meters high to allow clearance over the busy waterway. More than 2,000 ships pass through every day.

Half the waterway will be closed at a time for construction. Prefabrication will be used for the first time on a bridge across the river to minimize disruption to shipping and cut noise and pollution.

The Fengxian District government is investing 40 billion yuan (US$5.9 billion) to build 19 traffic projects including the bridge, a Metro line and a bus-only road, as well as highways and tunnels to improve links to downtown areas.

The total length of the new traffic infrastructure will be 162 kilometers by the end of this year.
