Work begins on S26 expressway section using innovative method

MAJOR construction started yesterday on a new elevated expressway to link the Hongqiao Central Business District and National Exhibition and Convention Center with downtown, as well as to help relieve traffic congestion in north Shanghai.

It also marks the first overall application of the “prefabricated method” on a single urban construction project in the city, which is being widely promoted to cut air pollution and noise during construction, the Shanghai Transport Commission said.

A crane lifted a 9-meter-tall concrete pillar for the “entry section” of the S26 Expressway into position at the construction site on Jidi Road in Minhang District, while workers assembled the 95-ton supportive pillar onto the foundation work.

The pillar was pre-manufactured in a nearby factory on Chengjiang Road with steel bars already installed inside.

About 68 percent of the elevated highway — including pillars, beams and steel structures — were pre-manufactured in the factory, according to its manufacturer, the STEC Shanghai Urban Construction Municipal Engineering Group.

With BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology, precision can be controlled to within 2 millimeters, said Jin Nai, the project manager with the group.

Though construction costs are 6 percent higher than the traditional method, the time needed can be cut by nearly half, while noise, flying dust and PM2.5 fine particles can also be effectively reduced, Jin told Shanghai Daily.

“Furthermore, ground transportation on Jidi Road can be restored right after the pillars are assembled,” he added. “Traditionally, the whole road must be blocked as large scaffolds will be set up for the on-site construction of pillars and structures.”

Unlike his counterparts on traditional projects, Jin can sit in his office and oversees the assembly work on computer through surveillance cameras installed on site. He said safety can also be better ensured for workers as they no longer need to climb up and down.

The S26 Expressway’s entry section to the city, also known as the Shanghai-Suzhou Expressway, stretches 7.08 kilometers from Huaxin Town in Qingpu District to the Jiamin Elevated Road in Minhang District.

Upon its opening by the end of 2018, the expressway will become a fast connection in the north for the Hongqiao Central Business District and the National Exhibition and Convention Center of Shanghai, according to the group. It is also expected to relieve the traffic pressure near the center, especially during major exhibition and convention events.

Apart from the expressway, the prefabricated methods have been applied at eight construction projects including the Jiangpu Road Tunnel, Longyao Road Tunnel and Metro Line 18’s Fangxin Road Station, according to the commission.

The method will be used for the construction of the city’s new bridges, tunnels, subways and harbors, said Yang Zhijie, director with the city’s transport construction management center under the commission. The center yesterday organized over 200 engineers, designers and project managers from the construction site to watch and study pillar installations.
