Watchdog fails gas cookers

MORE than 35 percent of gas cookers and gas water heaters out of 34 batches checked by the city’s market watchdog were found to be substandard due to carbon monoxide density and label problems, officials said yesterday.

Excessive carbon monoxide discharge could lead to poisoning, the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau warned. The bureau inspected 15 supermarkets, shopping malls and markets in Hongkou, Putuo districts and the Pudong New Area.

A batch of gas water heaters branded Whirlpool and sold by Suning Commerce Group and another batch of the same product branded “Midea” and sold at Baihui Jiashi market in Pudong were both found to have carbon monoxide hazards.

The substandard products had been taken off shelves and an investigation had been launched, the bureau said.
